Abdul Fatawu, born on 8 March, 2004 is a Ghanaian professional footballer. He plays as a winger for Leicester city currently in the EFL championship and the Ghana national team. He is known for his outstanding pace, skillful dribbling and creativity. Fatawu Club Careers

In 2019, at the age of fifteen, Fatawu started his football career with Tamale based club Steadfast FC, in the Zone one division one league in the Ghanaian second tier. He scored eight goals in his debut season with additional five assists in just 13 matches before the league was paused due to COVID-19 pandemic outbreak.

In his second season, he improved further, scoring 12 goals and providing 12 assists in 14 games and also picked multiple man of the match awards. This performance marked him as one of the talented players.

Sporting CP

After impressing at the international youth level, his breakthrough came in April 2022, when he signed a 5 years contract with sporting CP in portugal with a release clause of €60 million. The move ended months of speculations linking him other european clubs like Liverpool and Bayer leverkusen.

Before he joined the first team officially, he trained with the U-23 squad because he was still underage and the season is already ongoing and he couldn’t be registered for senior matches yet. He now trained and played with the B team to prepare for his official registration into the senior squad for the 2022-23 season.

Ahead of that season, Fatawu was included in sporting CP’s pre-season squad, joining the senior team for their training camp and friendly matches. He featured in his first pre-season game against Belgium side Royal Union saint-Gilloise, displaying his skills, pace and creativity on the wing.

on August 7 2022, Fatawu was named on the bench for the first time for the senior team in their league opener but he was an unused sub. A week later, he made his official debut, coming in as a substitute in the 80th minute to replace Francisco Trincao in their 3-0 win over Rio Ave. That marked the beginning of his professional journey in Europe’s top tier.

Although most of his appearances came from the bench and the B team, his technical and tactical flair began to earn him attention. His solid performances and success in the Africa U-20 cup of nations, where he scored twice and was also named the Best player of the tournament proved that Sporting CP secured one of Africa’s most promising young star.

Leicester city

On 31st August 2023, Abdul Fatawu made an exciting move to England, joining the EFL championship club Leicester city from Sporting CP on a season long loan. He didn’t wait long before he made his debut for the club as he was introduced as a 54th minute substitute three days later in the club’s 1-0 loss to Hull city.

On 21 October, Fatawu scored his first goal for his new club in their 3-1 away victory against Swansea city making his mark quickly. His standout moment came months later, On 23 April, when he delivered a stunning performance by scoring his first professional hat-trick in their 5-0 win against Southampton.

His loan deal to Leicester city from Sporting CP included a promotional clause that will allow Leicester city to sign him permanently for €17 million if they secure promotion to the Premier League which they did in May 2024. As part of prior agreements, his former club Steadfast FC earned a portion of profit from the transfer, thanks to a sell on clause inserted when they first transferred him to Sporting CP.

On 1 July 2024, Leicester City officially made Abdul Fatawu’s move permanent, activating his buy clause and signing him for €10 million on a five year deal with additional fee of €7 million. After his permanent move to Leicester, Fatawu’s jersey number changed from No. 18 to No. 7, reflecting his growing importance in the Leicester City first team.

He made his much anticipated premier league debut against Tottenham Hotspur on 19 August 2024 and quickly made an impact by providing his first premier league assist, setting up clu captain Jamie Vardy in a home 1-1 draw. The performance highlighted Fatawu’s potential and marked an exciting start to his permanent tenure at Leicester.

International Career

YOUTH TEAM

Abdul Fatawu’s rise through Ghana’s national teams began in 2018 when he earned a spot in the Ghana U-17 team coached by Karim Zito. The squad battled their way to the final of the 2018 WAFU zone B U-17 cup of nations. The final clash against rivals Nigeria ended 1-1 in regular time and moved into a penalty shootout, where Ghana lost 3-1, with Fatawu among those that missed his spot kick.

In 2020, he entered the leadership role as he became the captain of the Ghana U-17 team. He featured prominently during the 2021 U-17 African cup of nations qualifiers at the 2020 WAFU Zone B U-17 tournament, where he scored a crucial equalizing penalty in another heated contested match against Nigeria. Although Ghana exited the tournament after a 3-1 loss to Ivory Coast in the final group game, Fatawu still made his mark by assisting the only goal scored by Ghana in that match.

PROMOTION TO THE U-20 SIDE

Impressed by his performance and maturity, the Ghanaian U-20 coaching staff decided to promote Fatawu to the U-20 team in 2021, even though he was only 16 at that time. He was selected for the 2021 Africa U-20 cup of nations (AFCON), where he played an essential role throughout the tournament. Fatawu featured in all matches and scored two important goals in the group stage. His efforts helped Ghana clinch their fourth U-20 AFCON title and his performances earned him the prestigious BEST PLAYER OF THE TOURNAMENT AWARD.

BREAKTHROUGH WITH THE SENIOR NATIONAL TEAM

Abdul Fatawu’s exploits with the U-20s opened door for his first senior call-up in March 2021, as he was invited by C.K Akonnor to join the Ghana senior national team (Black Stars) for their Africa cup of nations qualifiers against South Africa and Sao Tome and Principe. He joined fellow U-20 AFCON winning teammates Philomon Baffour and Ibrahim Danlad who were also called up alongside him.

Fatawu scored a freekick for Ghana’s B Team in a friendly against Uzbekistan at the Markaziy stadium. Even though the game ended 2-1 in the favor of Uzbekistan, Fatawu was highly praised for his performance from both fans and analysts.

In september 2021, Fatawu made his official debut for the black stars in a 3-1 win over Zimbabwe in the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. Fatawu was later named in Ghana’s 28 man squad for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, becoming the youngest player in the team and the fourth overall youngest at the tournament. On 27 September 2021, Fatawu registered his debut goal for the Ghana black stars against Nicaragua.
