At youth level, Smit played a key role in AZ’s U-19 youth League victory, helping the club defeat Barcelona and Real Madrid to the reach the semi final of the tournament. He even scored a long range goal against Barcelona in the round sixteen. He went ahead to participate in the final of the tournament as they beat Hadjuk Split 5-0 to win the tournament.
Kees Smit made his Europa League debut for AZ Alkmaar on 7 November 2024. Playing a key role in a 3-1 home win against Fenerbahçe, where he found the back of the net and also provided an assist. He later featured in the 2025 KNVB cup final against Go Ahead Eagles on 21 April 2025. Though they were defeated on penalties after the match had ended 1-1 in normal time.
